Fatigue and Remaining Life Assessment of Steel Bridges More than 50 Years Old

چکیده
The present bridge network in Quebec includes approximately 9000 bridges of different types and represents a 9 billion dollars asset. Many bridges show signs of deterioration well before the end of the design life, supposedly between 50 to 100 years. Truck loading has increased by more than 40% in the past 40 years, and bridges have not been reinforced in order to comply with the new codes. The accumulated fatigue and remaining life of highway bridges will be reviewed in this paper. Railroad bridges are excluded because their loading analysis uses a different approach. The condition of steel bridges in full service for more than 50 years, which is the average age of most of bridges in operation in Canada, must be evaluated in a realistic way. Fatigue, severe climatic conditions such as temperature difference between hot and cold seasons, de-icing salt and corrosion are deterioration factors. At low temperatures, steel looses its ductility, thus increasing the risk of brittle fracture. Steel used 50 years ago was poorly deoxidized during pouring, and consequently fatigue cracks can propagate more easily through the impurities.

Journal of Bridge Engineering IMPROVED ASSESSMENT METHODS FOR STATIC AND FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF OLD METALLIC RAILWAY BRIDGES
13 A large number of the bridges in the European railway networks are metallic bridges. 14 The increasing volume of traffic and axle weight of trains mean that for many 15 structures the loads today are much higher than those envisaged when they were 16 designed. This paper presents a summary of the different recommendations and 17 advices proposed in “Guidelines for Load and Resistance Assessm...
متن کاملMethods for Better Assessment of Fatigue and Deterioration in Bridges and Other Steel or Concrete Constructions
Large metal and concrete structures suffer by various kinds of deterioration, and accurate prediction of the remaining life is important. This paper informs about two methods for its assessment. One method, suitable for steel bridges and other constructions exposed to fatigue, monitors the loads and damage accumulation using information systems for the operation and the finite element model of ...
متن کاملProbabilistic fatigue life estimates for riveted railway bridges
A large percentage of the railway bridges in the UK rail network and around Europe are of riveted construction exceeding in many cases 100 years of age. The remaining fatigue life of these bridges is difficult to estimate due to the uncertainties regarding the fatigue behaviour of wrought-iron and older steel material, which was used for their construction, as well as the actual loading and the...
متن کاملFatigue of Reinforcing Steel Bars Subjected to Natural Corrosion
Under badly environmental conditions as well as complex loads, corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel bars in concrete is common for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Fatigue of corrosion reinforcing steel bars is a key problem for old RC bridges. To assess the residual fatigue life of aged existing RC bridges, the most new study information on fatigue of natural corrosion reinforcement is ...

Abstract Background: Due to the high incidence of breast cancer and the effect of its early diagnosis on decreasing morbidity and mortality, we used the Gail model to study breast cancer risk in Iranian women. Methods: This study was done in a simple randomized way. Participants were 2000 Iranian women older than 35 years old. The questionnaire consisted of demographic data such a...
